Instagram now has 500 million users, 300 million of them active every day

Hitting a half-billion users for any app is no mean feat, but doing so with more than 60% of them using your app every single day is a laudable achievement. Today Instagram announced the social platform has reached 500 million users, with more than 300 million using the platform on a daily basis.
Instagram also confirmed that more than 80% of its users live outside the U.S., making Instagram a truly global social platform, what the company calls “windows to the world”. As Instagram notes in its press release: “every photo and video you share helps bring people closer to friends and interests, broadens perspectives and inspires a sense of wonder.”
Instagram has been in the news a fair bit lately, partially for its contentious new icon design and app UI overhaul, but also for getting hacked by a 10 year old. The photo and video sharing app also recently extended its video duration to 60 seconds.
This renewed emphasis on video can also be seen in Twitter’s extending of the Vine and Twitter video length to 140 seconds (up from six seconds and 30 seconds, respectively). With other major video platforms like YouTube, Facebook and Snapchat continuing to grow, video is clearly the medium of the future.
Do you post video on Instagram? What is your favorite platform for video?
