Crashland is already among the best adventure games released in 2016. In this one, you play as a space trucker named Flux who crash lands and gets stranded on an alien planet. Your job is to retrieve your cargo, build yourself a base, fight bad guys, and save the world. It has a lot of game elements, including crafting, combat, RPG-style character leveling, and you can even tame creatures to fight for your side. Dead Effect 2

Dead Effect 2 is a sci-fi FPS game with a dark storyline and fantastic graphics. This game boasts a 20-hour campaign mode along with an additional ten hours worth of side quests to keep you entertained. You’ll fight a variety of bad guys from mutated monsters to technologically enhanced aliens while your character levels up, gains new skills, and finds new gear that you can upgrade. It also has controller support, tons of achievements, and more. It’s a freemium game which means you’ll be pestered to buy stuff from time to time, but aside from that, this has earned its mark among the best adventure games out there.

Doom and Destiny Advanced

Doom and Destiny Advanced is a jRPG style game where you form a party of adventurers, fight monsters, and save the world. Unlike most, this one doesn’t take itself too seriously and you’ll be greeted with quirky, humorous dialogue and situations that you must get yourself out of. The game boasts dozens of hours of storyline, 500 places to explore, 15 character classes, 22 character outfits, tons of bad guys, 150 special powers, and more. Each game has an open world that you can explore, tons of missions that you can do, and plenty of other things that you can do. From stealing cars to shooting drug dealers, the titles will have you performing all sorts of tasks and you can do much of it on your own. The four games available on Android are Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, San Andreas, and Liberty City Stories. Their prices vary, but each game is huge with plenty of content.

Lara Croft Go

Lara Croft Go is a puzzle-adventure game where you must journey into the depths and find ancient artifacts. It has a unique turn-based game play where you move along the game’s board and the various obstacles and bad guys move as well which provides most of the challenge of the game. It contains over 100 puzzle rooms, some unique situations, hidden items to collect, and various things to unlock. It’s a tad expensive for what it is, but it’s beautifully done, contains cloud saving and achievements, and the developers have been consistent with adding new content to play through.

Lifeline series

The Lifeline series are a group of text-based adventure games that provide something a little bit different. Each game has an adventure where a character is doing something and you must guide them through the power of choices. If you fail, the character dies and if you succeed, they live. It’s a unique premise and these are done almost flawlessly. They also contain Android Wear support so you can actually play on your watch and Lifeline will send you a notification when it’s time for you to make another decision. They’re relaxing, but highly engaging and they’re inexpensive with no in-app purhcases.

Limbo

Limbo is a puzzle-adventure game where you play as a little boy who has traveled to Limbo (roll credits) to save his little sister. The game is a 2D puzzler with a unique monochrome style and some fairly engaging puzzles to solve. The game has no qualms with killing your character off whenever it can and the uninitiated should plan on dying a few times to figure out how the puzzles work. It’s a tad short and most playthroughs can get it done in about five to six hours, but you can try it before you buy it to see if it’s something you want to experience. Another shorter, but amazing adventure-puzzler is Monument Valley. If you end up liking Limbo, we highly recommend you try Monument Valley as well.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition

Minecraft: Pocket Edition is an adventure that you create yourself. For those who have been living under a rock, Minecraft is a completely open-world game where you can dig to the depths to find stuff, build whatever you want, craft all kinds of fun things, and fight off bad guys. With the inclusion of Minecraft Realms and, soon, mods, you’ll be able to do a whole lot more than you can now, play with your friends across platforms, and create your own adventures to go on. It’s quickly becoming one of the most immersive adventure games on mobile.

Out There

Out There is a sci-fi survival story about an astronaut that wakes up from cryogenic sleep in some mysterious part of the galaxy. Your job is to survive in the harshness of space, make friends with alien species, fix and enhance your ship, and there is a storyline that you play through. It’s a difficult game and one that will have you scratching your head and thinking tactically in order to survive. The game also comes with 59 achievements, a leaderboard, over 350 decisions that you’ll have to make, a crafting system, and, oddly, no combat. It’s one of the more underrated adventure games out there.

Rusty Lake (Cube Escape) series

Cube Escape is a series of mystery-adventure games where you must solve puzzles to find out what’s really going on. It’s also known as the “Rusty Lake story” and it’s actually playable online as a web game as well. The mechanics are fairly simple and each game has you solving a variety of puzzles in order to progress in the story. It’s technically they are escape games which means the majority of the time you’ll be solving puzzles. Still, it’s an excellent series of games and all of them are free with no in-app purchases making them the cheapest adventure games you can get.

Secret of Mana

Secret of Mana is an action-RPG style game that was originally released in the early 1990’s. It’s known for being easily accessible by both beginners and experts in the genre and employs a unique menu system, touch controls that are well done, and a pretty decent storyline. The premise is that you and your friends will battle the empire for control of the all powerful Mana. It’s a fun little game although it does run a little bit expensive. Shadowgun

Shadowgun is another sci-fi FPS game. This one has been around for a while and helped shape what a shooter should be like on Android and it remains one of the best FPS games to date. In this one, you play as a bounty hunter and you’re to hunt down Dr. Edgar Storm before he can wreak havoc everywhere. It features a campaign mode, tons of weapons and upgrades to find and equip, and some pretty decent graphics. There is also an online multiplayer component that you can download separately called Shadowgun DeadZone.

Telltale Games collection

Telltale Games have released a number of episodic adventures and they’re all pretty good. Currently, there are seven games in their lineup with more coming sooner or later. Each game gives you the first episode when you download it and you’ll have to purchase the other episodes as in-app purchases. Several of them are free to start, including Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead Seasons 1 and 2, Tales from the Borderlands, and The Wolf Among Us. Each game has puzzle and adventure elements with fleshed out storylines and decent graphics. They’re all fairly excellent adventure games and worth a download.

This War of Mine

This War of Mine is an excellent survival game and our pick for the best Android game released in 2015. In this, you play as a group of war survivors inside of a city currently being occupied by the enemy. Your job is to keep your little collective alive by gathering supplies, crafting things, and making some ridiculously hard choices. The game’s hallmark feel is that it’s not necessarily fun, but it’s really interesting and it’s a game you’ll likely want to replay to see if you can do things differently. It’s expensive, but worth it. It is that good.

Ys Chronicles 1 and 2

[Price: $4.99 each]
Ys Chronicles are two jRPG games that were popular in the early 2000s and have been released on mobile by DotEmu. They employ hack-and-slash mechanics and the story revolves around finding the six sacred books that are used to banish the demons from the Esteria kingdom. In the second game, the story continues further and you’ll be asked to find even more secrets. That means you’ll definitely need to start with the first one.
